A five bar gate is always a popular choice of gate. A five bar gate would normally be hung on the back of the post, so that when it opens it completely clears the gap. To hang the gate between the posts would result in the gate being able to open in both directions, but reduces the access by the thickness of the gate and the hinges, with a pair this can be as much as 12". We normally supply these gates treated with Protek, a water based preservative, but they can be painted or stained and they look great when they’re done.

The hanging posts for these gates are normally 7” square and placed into the ground approximately 30”. The standard finish is to cap the posts, but two & four sided points or rounded tops are also easy to achieve.

I use an adjustable hinge set to hang these gates, latching with either an auto latch or the more traditional lever arm. With a pair of gates, I normally use an 18” drop bolt & throw over loop to keep them in the shut position.

The pictures below show some of the many combinations that we can do, and are all variations on a similar theme. Please click on the pictures for a larger image and use your browser’s ‘back’ button to return to this page

This is a straight forward single five bar gate erected on the back of a pair of 7” posts. The posts are capped and the gate is about 11” wide. Some of you may recognise this gate as the entrance to the old Millhouse Towers :) The gate below is similar, but shows the five rails to the side to close off the gap.

An example of the problems faced with a steep hill. The centre post makes a break between the two levels.

The customer needed these gates to open in both directions to enable him to get a caravan in and out so they were hung between the posts.

In this case the customer wanted the gates to open outwards due to lack of space on the drive.

The next three show examples of single estate gates, which have the distinctive ‘hockey stick’ brace and a slightly lower  profile than the standard five bar gate.

The rest of these photographs show the various combinations available with a pair of gates.

This pair was bolted straight to the walls, which works well if the gate length is about 8’ or less. The rear facing shot clearly shows the drop bolt and throw over loop. Note the double brace on the smaller gate. This was done purely for aesthetic reasons.
